How to Conquer Winter Angling This Season

For many anglers, the winter season means locking up your boat in storage and waiting for months to pass until you can be out in the water again. But for others, it means preparing for a challenging yet thrilling season of angling ahead.

Fishing in the winter has a completely different feeling than what you may be accustomed to compared to the rest of the year – but that doesn’t mean you won’t land a bite. Adapt to fishing in this weather with some of these great tips that could help you stay safe and land some great catch.

Check locations before heading out

Although checking the right spot to fish at is something that applies to all weather conditions, it is even more important during the winter. You don’t have as many hours out in the daylight to visit several spots and wait around to see if they are promising or not. Check your local state resources for suggestions on what fish can be found where during this weather. Knowing where to cast your line is going to save you time and exposure to the cold while you wait on your boat for the right catch to come through.

Weather check is a must

Weather affects fish activity levels and for you to be able to have a productive angling session during the winter, it’s better to check beforehand what kind of circumstances you will be heading out in. Not only will they guide you better about your catch but can also help you avoid storms and winds that will come in the way of you enjoying your day out in the water.

Appropriate gear and bait

Cold temperatures aren’t very kind on your fishing gear – it can freeze up your reel’s bearings along with thickening up old oil and grease. Make sure to tune up your reels and use a line conditioner to keep your line from tangling and prevent water from collecting on it because that will end up freezing and prevent your line from moving smoothly.

Keep your sessions shorter

With fewer hours of daylight during the winter days, you want to try and head out at a time where you can be most productive and less exposed to long stretches of waiting in the cold. Take your pick of what time of the day works best for you and instead of a few long sessions, switch over this season to frequent shorter ones instead.

Dress warm and comfortable

If you are freezing cold or sitting soaked in bitter winds, chances are you’ll be more focused on heading home and getting warm instead of being able to pay attention to your fishing techniques. During these cold months, dress in multiple layers that will keep you warm and help stay dry. Wear waterproof shoes and a winter fishing coat can help fight the weather and the water too!
