1. Fishing gear essentials.
· Make sure everyone on your angling boat has a life jacket, hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. It is also important to have a first aid kit, rain jacket, towel, bug spray, water, and plenty of snacks to keep everyone fueled for your angling adventure.
· Having the right size equipment for them to use. Some rods or hooks could be too large for them to properly manage.
· Do not forget to check your local state regulations before the trip to make sure you have all the documentation you need to enjoy the day on the water.
2. Location, Location, Location.
· Does your angling boat have a bathroom onboard? If not, you may want to plan to fish where there is a public restroom around the corner. Also, picking a nice quiet place to fish can help your child feel calm and ready to listen to all your essential fishing tips.
3. Start with the easy fish.
· There is no shame in fishing close to the shoreline with a basic hook, sinker, and bobber so that they can target some of the smaller and easier fish to hook. This will get them used to hooking a fish, reeling it in, and releasing it back into the wild. It also makes it exciting to start out catching fish even if they are smaller.
4. Take breaks.
· If your young angler is feeling restless, park the angling boat at a nearby island or park and let them have some fun exploring. Then they will be ready to set sail again! Also, for the first few trips, you may want to shorten your typical agenda. Your children might not be ready for a full day of fishing and that is ok. If you don’t overdo it on your first trip, they will continue to love the sport as much as you do.
5. Capture the memories.
· Do not forget to bring a camera or use your phone to capture these exciting new experiences for your young angler. That way you can have a souvenir from your first angling adventure together.
